A testament to the beauty of life, Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14, also known as “Death and the Maiden,” has been called “one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire.” It was composed in 1824 after the composer suffered a serious illness and realized he was dying. Published in 1831, three years after Schubert’s death, each movement of the piece conjures a different episode in the mythic process of death and resurrection.
The Emerald String Quartet will perform “Death and the Maiden,” a quartet that is characterized throughout by sudden dramatic shifts, from the lyrical to the compelling and dramatic. Comprised of members of the South Arkansas Symphony, the Emerald String Quartet features violinists Kiril Laskarov and Diana Norwod, violist Borys Smolaga, cellist Brett Andrews and pianist Dean Pieskee.
