The South Arkansas Symphony will welcome the gold medal winner of the 69th Annual Wideman International Piano Competition in an impressive chamber concert this spring.

The Wideman International Piano Competition has been held annually the first weekend of December at Centenary College – Hurley School of Music under the auspices of the Shreveport Symphony Guild since 1950. Judged by nationally and internationally known pianists and conductors, the competition draws outstanding talent from throughout the United States and the world.

Nena Wideman, a former member of Centenary College piano faculty, was the guiding spirit of the first competition and continued with unwavering enthusiasm until her death in 1983. In 1982, the Shreveport Symphony created an endowment in honor of Wideman and established the permanence of this annual event, now one of the top piano competitions.

Each year, the South Arkansas Symphony has the privilege of hosting the gold-medal winners of this prestigious competition in a special chamber concert in El Dorado. The Symphony extends the competitions goal of promoting excellence and encouragement to young pianists as they embark on their careers.
