Matisse's Garden Virtual Workshop

One day the artist Henri Matisse cut a small bird from a white piece of paper. Because he liked the way the simple shape looked, he pinned it to the wall of his studio. He thought the bird looked lonely on his wall so he cut out more shapes to join it. Matisse had taken the first step in creating a new form of art, one that would transform his walls into a blooming, vibrant garden.

Join artist and art educator Gay Bechtelheimer as she reads the book Matisse’s Garden by Samantha Friedman. Afterwards, using scissors, construction paper, and glue, she will guide children as they create their own composition inspired by the magic of Matisse’s scissors.
